Craft Stick Christmas Ornaments

By Laura Miller December 18, 2015
Honey and I have been working on some craft stick ornaments. Our bin of random craft supplies came in handy for adding embellishments. I only purchased the paint -- one set of multi colored acrylic plus a shimmery white for snow and then black and orange puff paint for snowman features. We already had the foam, cotton, yarn, eyes, sequins, pipe cleaners and more in our stash!

Honey's creations, minus a snowflake that fell apart and a snowman that became part of her teacher's gift.

What you need:
Craft sticks (the wide ones for the characters, regular for the snowflake)
Paint (we used acrylic)
Puff paint (orange and black)
Googly eyes (very small)
Toothpicks
Pipe cleaners, ribbons or strips of fabric
Various decorations like foam, sequins, yarn, etc.

What you do:
Paint the base coats for each ornament. Two coats, letting them dry between each one. After embellishing, glue a ribbon or piece of string to the back of each to make a hanger, letting the glue dry overnight before hanging.

Snowmen
Paint approximately 3/4 white and 1/4 the color you choose for the hat. Also paint a toothpick hat brim for each snowman. After the second coat of white, paint a coat of the shimmery white, if using.

To assemble, glue the brim to the hat, then draw the face and buttons with puff paint. I recommend practicing first! I tried a few styles of carrot noses and settled on doing a 3D version where I slowly made a cone shape and lifted the tip as I went. It fell a little, but still sticks out enough. After all the paint is dry, tie a pipe cleaner, ribbon or strip of fabric (or even paper) around the "neck" for a scarf.

Santa and Elves
Paint approx. 3/4 red or green and 1/4 flesh color of your choice.

To assemble, lay a craft stick on the red or green foam and trace to get the with of the hats, then draw the rest of the hat and cut out (I used a toothpick to trace). Glue the hat to the top of the stick, then add a brim and tassel with either white yarn or cotton (I used yarn and snipped off a tiny piece for the tassel). Add googly eyes, then paint or draw the rest of the face. For Santa's mouth, I made an "O" shaped mouth as if he was saying "Ho ho ho", then I shaped the beard, leaving a hole near the top so some of the mouth showed through. Cut a piece of black foam the width of the stick for the belt and add a yellow square for the buckle (you can do the same for the elf... I think I am going to add it later). If you have something else that would make a good buckle, use it!

Snowflakes
Paint 3-4 regular sized craft sticks in a light blue or white. Honey and I had fun mixing to get the color we wanted. Mine ended up being white with a dab of blue and some shimmery white. Honey did each stick a different color.

To assemble, glue the centers of the sticks together. Let the glue dry completely, then glue or stick on sequins or gemstones or other shiny things.

Practicing Snowman faces... Honey thought it was VERY funny.
