Take A Colorful Nature Walk

By Jennifer Chasse, New River Valley, VA Publisher May 15, 2013
Make your next walk a hunt for specific colors (try this any time of the year). This is an easy project that can be made very simple as your time/ materials/ patience demands.

You’ll need:
  • An empty egg carton
  • Paints and paintbrushes
Paint the inside of an egg carton different colors. Encourage the children to mix colors together or add black or white to create different hues.

Want it less messy? Use markers or crayons.
Need it even easier? Place crayon pieces inside your egg carton, and/or use a muffin tin.

Head out on a nature walk and try to look for things that match your colors. Even in the winter you might find leaves, rocks, feathers, grasses, shrubs and other natural elements, as well as bottle caps and other debris that match your bins. Continue the walk until you fill your carton. I did this project with a group of kids ages 6-12 and all ages enjoyed it.
