Getting Kids' Clothing and Gear Ready for Spring/Summer Outdoor Fun

By Sara-Lynne Levine March 3, 2021

It's been a long winter for some of us in northern climates, but it looks like it's finally spring and time to get ready for warmer outdoor activities. Of course, that means a whole new set of gear for the kids, as you put away the snow pants and pull out the windbreakers. But nothing ruins a fun day out more than finding out at the last minute that someone's rainboots no longer fit or you've forgotten where you stashed the kids' sunglasses.

Take a minute to run through this spring to-do list to make sure you're ready for your first warm-weather outing so you're not caught unprepared in the sunshine without your favorite sun protection or deflated bike tire!

Kid’s Clothes

  • Check “spring” jackets and raincoats to see if they fit.
  • Check out last year’s rain boots and try them on.
  • Locate sunglasses, ball caps, and sun hats.
  • Spend some time with your kids trying on summer shoes, t-shirts, and shorts to see what fits and what’s ready to donate or hand down to the next kid.
  • Start washing wool socks, sweaters, long underwear, and other winter clothes.
  • Wash and put away snow pants, boots, hats, and scarves and pair up mittens for next winter.
  • Be sure bike helmets and any other safety equipment like elbow and knee pads still fit.

Outdoor Gear

  • Buy sunscreen. You will need it before you know it.
  • Check kids bicycles to make sure tires are inflated, handlebars are attached securely, and the seat is the correct height.
  • Inflate basketballs, soccer balls, and inspect other sports gear.
  • Check the condition of water gear and toys (if they grew mildew in storage, toss them).
  • Inspect swing sets and play systems to make sure they are in good condition.

Take care of these basics early so when the warm weather arrives, it will be all fun and games.
