Homemade Laundry Detergent

Saves money and cleans great!

I have tried different recipes, but this is my favorite:

Here's what you need:

  • 1 large soup pot
  • 1 wooden spoon
  • 1 bar of Fels Naptha
  • 1 cup of Super Washing Soda
  • 1 cup of Borax
  • ¼ cup Baking soda
  • 1- 5 gallon painter’s bucket – or equivalent container.

Here's what you do:

  1. Fill your large soup pot with water - about ½ inch from the top of pot.
  2. Bring to a boil.
  3. Lower heat.
  4. Shred the bar of soap into the water.
  5. Measure other ingredients and add to the pot.
  6. With your wooden spoon mix until all ingredients are dissolved.
  7. Turn stove of; allow contents to sit for about 5 minutes.
  8. Pour the contents of the pot into the 5 gallon painter’s bucket.
  9. Fill soup pot with cool water and ad to 5 gallon bucket, continue to fill bucket until you reach about 1-2 inches from the top.
  10. Place lid onto bucket and allow laundry soap to cool.

Once your laundry soap is cooled it will become a solid jell like substance. As it sits it will separate and you can use as is or stir the laundry soap to create a mixture which will look a bit like jelly. I stir mine.

I use 1 cup of laundry soap per load, that’s 80 cups of laundry soap, I also ad a smidging of fabric softener to each load, or you can add a drop of your favorite essential oil for a light scent.

Break down the Savings: per batch/per load:

  • Borax (76 0z. box) - average cost $3.60 - spending $0.40 per batch
  • Super Washing Soda (55 oz. box)- average cost $3.89- spending $ 0.64 per batch
  • Fels Naptha- average cost $1.59 using the entire bar
  • Baking Soda (76 oz. box) -$2.89 spending $0.18

Total cost per batch $ 2.81, may average usage from 1 batch is 80 loads, so I am spending about $.03 per load of laundry! Winner!
